When a person donates blood it is collected into a sealed air tight bag. These bags are stored in a cool environment. The blood is kept refrigerated so it will not coagulate.

Whole blood, the blood used for transfusions, is typically mixed with an anti-coagulant and sealed in tough plastic bags. These bags are then refrigerated and kept at temperatures of one to six degrees Celsius. The blood is then held for about five weeks.
