There are many theories as to why there was a period of time called the ice age. There are at least five known ice ages in Earth's history. Generally, atmospheric conditions, changes in the Earth's orbit, wind and ocean currents and the movement of tectonic plates are some of the factors of an ice age. You can find more information here:
