A solar prominence is a flare of hot gas which is shot out from the surface of the sun and often extends hundreds of thousands of miles from the sun's surface.

A prominence is a bright form that extends from the surface of the sun in the shape of a loop. A prominence can be created in as little as a day and last for several months. Scientists don't yet know why or how a prominence is created.
